Reid Center Receives $100,000 Grant

The Jack and Debra Edelman Foundation has awarded The Reid Center a grant of $100,000 for upgrades to the facility. Foundation representatives making the check presentation on Thursday, September 24, were Mark Maddox (Fishers, IN, attorney), president and executive director; Bob Bever (Richmond attorney), vice president and chief legal counsel; and Beth Lydick (Richmond), secretary/treasurer and grant administrator.

The entire amount of the grant will fund upgrades to the building for fire and life safety, required by the Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission. Upon gaining ownership of the property in July 2026, The Reid Center, a 501(c)(3) organization, experienced a change of Indiana state occupancy code from worship and recreation to performing arts/theaters, warranting the upgrades.

Due to the building’s architectural and historical significance, The Reid Center applied for and received five state variances allowing alternate approaches to the upgrades. According to a Reid Center statement, these variances will help preserve the aesthetics and historically distinctive elements of the building while securing occupant safety. The Reid Center will be better positioned as a sustainable national cultural asset, elevating the arts and advancing historic preservation and community revitalization in Wayne County, per the statement.
